More than 25% of small animal owners' referrals to veterinary medicine specialists are related to skin pathology caused by dermatophytes. Animals suffering from dermatomycosis with a subclinical form of the course represent a special safety, after which, in case of complications of the pathological process, they can be dangerous for human health. Pathogenic fungi of the genus Trichophyton and Microsporum occupy a special place among the most common pathogens that provoke the development of dermatitis among small animals. In veterinary practice, mycosis caused by a representative of the saprophytic flora of the class Deuteromycetes, genus Alternaria Nees – Alternaria alternata (tenuis) is increasingly recorded. The research was conducted from 2019 to 2022 on the basis of the State Research Institute for Laboratory Diagnostics and Veterinary-Sanitary Expertise. The subject of the study was biological material from dogs and cats affected by microorganisms of the genera Microsporum, Trichophyton and Alternaria alternata. During isolation and identification of dermatomites, Sabouraud's medium and Dermatophyte agar base with a selective supplement were used. The accounting of the results and the identification of the pathogen were based on the description of the growth morphology of the colonies with micromycete determinants. Based on the conducted research, 272 (44.3%) laboratory-confirmed cases of dermatomycosis were found in 614 samples of biological material, of which 139 (22.6%) were in dogs and 133 (21.7%) were in cats from the total number of studied material, respectively. During this period, 174 cases of damage to animals by microscopic fungi of the genus Alternaria alternata were recorded, which is 28.3% of the total amount of researched material, 31 cases of damage by microscopic fungi of the genus Trichophyton, which is 5.1%, and 67 cases of the genus Microsporum (10.9 %) respectively. The cultural method of research allows to clearly identify the causative agents of dermatomycosis, but requires a rather long 10-day period of research.
